Calculating Speed

 Our first concept in the Motion topic is calculating speed:

The key thing to remember is to convert units into SI units (metres, m, for distance; seconds, s, for time; metres per second, ms-1, for speed).

TIME, t

Units = seconds (s)
One minute = 60 seconds (multiply by 60 if you are given the time in minutes)
One hour = 3600 seconds (multiply by 3600 if you are given the time in hours)

DISTANCE, d

Units = metres (m)
1km = 1000m (multiply by 1000 if you are given the distance in kilometres))
100 cm = 1m (divide by 100 if you are given the distance in centimetres)
1000mm = 1m (divide by 1000 if you are given the distance in millimetres)

SPEED/VELOCITY, v

Units = metres per second (ms-1)
1ms-1 = 3.6km/h

If you are given a speed in km/h, you divide by 3.6 to get the answer in ms-1.
If you have an answer in ms-1 but want it in km/h, you multiply by 3.6.
